The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) is encouraging our partners, stakeholders and the public to provide comments on the SFWMD's Draft 2023-2028 Strategic Plan.

The plan serves as a blueprint for achieving balanced regional water resource management. The SFWMD updates the Strategic Plan annually to highlight its work to continue advancing Everglades restoration, protecting communities from flooding, meeting the region’s water needs, and engaging the public and stakeholders over the next five years.

KEY LARGO --The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Governing Board today officially recognized May 15-21, 2022 as Water Reuse Week.

The annual recognition, signified by a purple jacket worn by one Governing Board member to represent the purple pipes that carry reclaimed water, is made by the Governing Board each year to highlight the ongoing efforts to encourage the use of reclaimed water. Today, "Alligator Ron" Bergeron passed the ceremonial purple jacket to Governing Board Member Jacqui Thurlow-Lippisch. 

The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Governing Board declared April as Water Conservation Month, highlighting the work District staff do promoting the conservation of South Florida's most precious resource, water.

Every gallon conserved is a gallon not pulled from underground aquifers which allows us to have enough water supply for the future and hold back saltwater intrusion from sea-level rise. Conserving water is important to ensure that families, businesses and the environment continue to thrive.

OKEECHOBEE, Fla. - The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the S-191A Pump Station, the final component of the Lakeside Ranch Stormwater Treatment Area (STA) Project. This project is one of the priority Everglades restoration projects identified by Gov. Ron DeSantis in his "Achieving More Now for Florida's Environment Executive Order." 

The project will increase the flow of water south to the Everglades and mitigate flooding in the Las Palmas community.

The South Florida Water Management District held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of an underground seepage wall in the 8.5 Square Mile Area (Las Palmas Community). The underground concrete wall will help mitigate flooding in the 8.5 Square Mile Area, keep water in Everglades National Park, and support increased flows of water south which are necessary for Everglades restoration. 

Today, City of Pahokee Mayor Keith Babb presented the “Key to the City” to the South Florida Water Management District (District) for their assistance with cleaning up the blue-green algal blooms at the Pahokee Marina. In addition to the City’s efforts to combat algae in the marina, the District also turned on brand-new circulator pumps to keep the water moving at the Pahokee Marina and aid in the prevention of new blue-green algal blooms.

The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) will begin the second phase of its project to removal shoal and sediment from the C-24 Canal in St. Lucie County on June 14. The project will stretch from State Road 70 to Orange Avenue west of Fort Pierce and is expected to last a year.

The C-23, C-24 and C-25 Shoal Removal Project will remove an estimated 448,000 cubic yards of sediment from the canals, improving conveyance in the canals to support flood protection efforts for local residents.

The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Governing Board appointed one of its members, Miami-Dade native Charlie Martinez, to serve on the newly formed Biscayne Bay Commission at yesterday's meeting of the board.
