The South Florida Water Management District, along with our local, state and federal partners, works on the largest ecosystem restoration project in the world: Restoring America's Everglades. Did you know that our historic progress will support the ecological health of South Florida's natural resources and protect the Everglades for future generations?
SFWMD’s team of scientists, engineers, water managers, and many other staff from Orlando to the Florida Keys support the District’s mission: To safeguard and restore South Florida’s water resources and ecosystems, protect our communities from flooding, and meet the region’s water needs while connecting with the public and stakeholders.
In celebration of Earth Day this Friday, April 22, we’re spotlighting the District’s role in managing and protecting water resources for the people and the environment of South Florida. Every day, District staff is working throughout our 16-county region to:
- Advance Everglades restoration
- Safeguard and restore South Florida’s ecosystems
- Maintain and improve water quality through treatment, best practices and increased water storage
- Provide water supply for all of South Florida's needs
- Protect communities from flooding
This Earth Day, SFWMD is also celebrating an important anniversary for Everglades restoration. One year ago, on April 22, 2021, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a Project Partnership Agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to allow for the federal construction of the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Reservoir Project. When complete, the project will reduce harmful discharges to the northern estuaries and send more water south for the benefit of the Everglades ecosystem and the people of Florida.
The District continues to make significant progress on the EAA Reservoir Project and other priority Everglades restoration and water quality improvement projects. We remain committed to doing more now for Florida’s environment on Earth Day - and every day.
