The water levels in the Kissimmee River and surrounding lakes are managed according to a plan known as a regulation schedule. To support flood control, water supply and the health of the lakes and restoration of the Kissimmee River, a new regulation schedule is being proposed.
The Kissimmee River Headwaters Revitalization Schedule is the last piece of the Kissimmee River Restoration Project, which was jointly developed and constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the South Florida Water Management District over the last 30 years. Construction for the Kissimmee River Restoration Project was completed in 2021.
The Headwaters Revitalization Schedule will be implemented in phases to hold more water in Lakes Kissimmee, Cypress and Hatchineha to allow historic flows to the Kissimmee River while maintaining the same level of flood protection. Increment 1 of the Headwaters Revitalization Schedule is being implemented as a deviation to the current Interim Regulation Schedule. Development of Increment 1 started in 2021 and it is anticipated to be approved this year.
Public and stakeholder input in the development and adoption of a new water management plan is important. The SFWMD encourages public and stakeholder input. We look forward to your participation and strongly encourage your attendance.
