The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) has issued a temporary burn ban on District lands in Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry, Highlands and Polk Counties due to dry conditions and the imminent danger of wildfires in the region.

The temporary burn ban includes the building or maintaining of fires for recreational purposes on District lands.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Today, Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez announced that registration for the 2024 Florida Python Challenge® is now open. Participants this year will have the chance to win a share of more than $25,000 in prizes for removing invasive Burmese pythons from the wild. Starting today, those interested in participating in the 2024 Florida Python Challenge® can complete the required online training to compete in the 10-day competition which runs August 9–18, 2024. The competition is open to both professional and novice participants.

Miami-Dade County, Fla. - Today, the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers joined local, state, federal and tribal officials as well as stakeholders to cut the ribbon on the Central Everglades Planning Project (CEPP) New Water Seepage Barrier Wall Project, which extends the successful underground wall that was built as part of the 8.5 Square Mile Area Seepage Wall Project. 

The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) is upgrading the reference system used to measure water elevations. Water elevation readings, also known as water level readings, will soon be reported in the newer North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88) instead of the National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 (NGVD 29).

Today, the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Governing Board proclaimed April as Water Conservation Month. This annual proclamation highlights SFWMD's continuing efforts to conserve water and ensure an ample supply now and in the future.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Today, Governor Ron DeSantis signed Senate Bill (SB) 1638, Funding for Environmental Resource Management, which provides $150 million for necessary repairs and upgrades to the Central and South Florida Water Management System. The bill further directs 96% of the revenue generated from the Seminole Tribe Compact to fund water quality improvement, infrastructure, and the continued acquisition and management of Florida’s conservation lands. As of February 2024, the revenue share estimates are approximately $750 million per year.

The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) today released the 2024 South Florida Environmental Report (SFER) underscoring the continued progress for Everglades restoration and water quality across Central and Southern Florida.

The annual SFER report highlights record hydration and improvement of water quality, significant momentum for sending more water south, groundbreakings and ribbon cuttings of major Everglades restoration projects, and many other important milestones for the resiliency of the region’s water resources and ecosystems.

This is the final week to apply for funding for alternative water supply and water conservation projects! The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) is accepting applications for cost-share projects until February 26, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. Apply at sfwmd.gov/coopfunding.
