Resiliency and Flood Protection
Flood Resiliency Data
The South Florida Flood Information Resource consolidates and centralizes regional flood observation data and historical event information and makes it accessible to local governments and the public. This webpage hosts a Local Contact Viewer that connects residents with the local flood protection authority that serves their area.
The SFWMD’s flood observation survey allows resiliency partners to report local flood conditions. It provides real-time insights to water managers, supports monitoring and documentation of emerging flood conditions and trends, and informs resiliency adaptation planning.

This survey is used by agencies to better understand flooding conditions in Central and Southern Florida. This survey does not replace the need to contact your local drainage operator. All flooding that poses a risk to your home or property should also be reported to your local drainage operator. Life-threatening flooding should always be reported to 9-1-1.
To learn who to contact, go to SFWMD.gov/FloodControl and enter your address.
Flood Resiliency Planning Studies
As a key part of its resiliency strategy, the SFWMD continues assessing the status of its flood control infrastructure and advancing adaption strategies necessary to continue providing primary flood protection for South Florida and other mission critical services.
The Flood Protection Level of Service Program ensures the regional flood control system provides the desired level of flood protection today and will continue to do so, with consideration for sea level rise, as well as more intense rainfall events. Read FAQs about how the Flood Protection Level of Service Program is integrated to the Sea Level Rise and Flood Resiliency Plan.
The District has partnered with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to initiate the Central and Southern Florida Flood Resiliency Study, to revisit the Central and Southern Florida Project, designed more than 70 years ago. The study is justified by the changed physical conditions already impacting the original project purposes, including land development, population increase, sea level rise and climate change. The study assesses which infrastructure is at the highest risk of impact from a changing climate and address flood vulnerabilities, by enhancing the capacity of the most vulnerable coastal water control structures and adjacent primary canals.
Flood Resiliency Implementation Projects
The SFWMD Sea Level Rise and Flood Resiliency Plan characterizes a comprehensive list of priority resiliency projects being implemented with the goal of reducing the risks of flooding, sea level rise, and other climate impacts on water resources and increasing community and ecosystem resiliency in South Florida. It is integrated into the District’s Capital Improvement Program to ensure its structures, pumps, canals -- all of which are critical in keeping South Florida habitable -- are functioning as designed and will remain operational in the event of major storm events or disasters. In addition to long term strategies, short term solutions that are being implemented to better understand and quickly recover from storms include enhanced operations, structure hardening, control and backup generators, and installing additional pumps, as detailed in the 2024-2029 Strategic Plan.
Previous Workshops
The SFWMD Flood Impact Assessment Tool (FIAT) was developed to support flood damage cost and benefits estimates. A Public Workshop was hosted on May 31, 2022 to launch the tool and make it available to resiliency partners.
